Hospice is a holistic approach to health care for those with a life-limiting illness. The goal of hospice is not to cure illness but to alleviate pain, control symptoms, focus on the quality of remaining life and provide spiritual, social, and emotional support for the resident and their family.

Hospice care focuses on comfort and symptom management. The team is comprised of resident-physician, medical directors, nurses, social workers, home health aides, chaplains, trained volunteers, and bereavement counselors and "Comfort Care". Hospice care does not try to hasten or delay passing away but rather focuses on comfort, relief from pain and time spent with loved ones.

These are some of the ways that hospice can help:

  • Pain Relief and Symptom Management

  • Counseling and Spiritual Support - Offering emotional support to individuals and their families.

  • Providing information about changes one might experience as the illness progresses

  • Guiding families in giving care and support to their loved one

  • Preventing hospitalizations with a hospice nurse available any time, day or night

  • Bereavement Services - Making bereavement support available to families in a variety of ways

  • 24/7 Nursing Care Services, Licensed Nurses and Professional Caregivers

  • Social Services

Anyone coping with a terminal diagnosis is welcome to inquire about hospice programs at any point. You do not have to wait until your doctor recommends hospice to learn about your options.

Although many people believe that hospice care is designed to provide the necessary care for the final days of life, studies have proven that earlier engagement of hospice can extend life and improve quality of life as well. The most appropriate time to begin receiving hospice care is when the decision has been made to switch from curative treatments to comfort care.

A hospice team can provide clinical, social, and emotional support to help clients make the most of each day. We will work closely with you and your family to provide assistance and support throughout the process.

Many patients qualify for hospice care under the Medicare or Medicaid Hospice Benefit, as well as private health insurance.

  • What is hospice care?

Hospice represents a compassionate approach to the end-of-life experience. It provides comforting care that emphasizes quality of life rather than finding a cure. Our main goal is to relieve pain and discomfort with efforts directed to the provision of support services for residents and their loved ones.

  • When is hospice care appropriate?

Hospice care is appropriate for terminal residents who decide that curative care is no longer feasible or desirable. To qualify for hospice, you must have two physicians certify that you have 6 months or less life expectancy, and you must elect to stop curative treatment.

  • Does hospice care shorten life expectancy?

No. Studies have actually shown that providing residents with the comfort of hospice can actually increase life expectancy.

  • Does hospice care provide assistance for family members of patients?

Hospice provides support services for family members and friends during the resident care experience. Following this experience, support services are available to survivors for a period of up to 13 months.
